Bissinger's Kreta Olive Oil Truffles

Bissinger's Kreta Olive Oil Truffles

Some of you may remember a post I did back in January about the delicious chocolates I discovered at the Winter Fancy Food Show (San Francisco). I was particularly smitten by what I called “the Sophia Loren of the chocolate world,” the Kreta Olive Oil Truffle created by Bissinger’s Handcrafted Chocolatier, because it seduces you over and over again.

I had noted after tasting it for the first time:

The masterpiece confection is enrobed in a luxurious coat of rich milk chocolate, and perfectly accented with a sprinkling of Fleur de Sel on top, giving you a little burst of excitement every time your tongue hits a crystal.

The flavor is playful, dreamlike, and dissolves in your mouth like slowly melting satin. You will be taken away for a few exquisite moments, trying to capture the elusive flavor of liquid gold coaxed from the ageless olive trees of Crete.

And now, because I love you, and because it’s time I had another Friday Freebie, I offer you…a chance to win this box of luxurious, alluring, and utterly divine, Bissinger’s Kreta Olive Oil Truffles.

Bissinger’s has been nominated for a Sofi Award and will be at the Summer Fancy Food Show (New York) June 28-30, 2009, so if you’re in town, it’s definitely worth checking out.

They’ll be unveiling at the show the new market-ready truffles, currently only available for purchase online in wholesale quantities. If you’re not buying decadence in bulk these days, you’ll have to wait until mid-August when the 9-piece box ($17.95) is expected to hit the Bissinger’s catalog and gourmet specialty stores.

Lucky for you instant gratification junkies, I have a box of these to-die-for chocolates already waiting for you.

  1. mmmmh…I have many favs. I love chocolate truffles, I love the classic chocolate chip cookies. and I am known to sneak a hershey bar every once in awhile…haha

  2. Kaethe says:

Marshall’s Mint Frangoes (now Macy’s mint frangoes). I’ve had these ever since I was a little girl, back when you could only get them from Grampa when he came to visit from the midwest… They come in a box of 50 – minty, chocolatey goodness, and are incredible if you keep them cold (fridge or freezer).

  3. Carolyn G says:

I love making homemade chocolate frosting and eating that.

  4. Dskco says:

When I’m craving chocolate I’ll literally eat semi-sweet chocolate chips out of the bag, haha. Funny you had this post because I’m actually eating them as I type.

  5. You make it sound so easy, “simply leave a comment here telling me: What’s your favorite chocolate fix?” well let me tell you, its not that simple. I do the chocolate chips out of the bag, I have a stash of Mexican hot chocolate disks for a liquid fix, there are chocolate bars in every room in the house, ok not the bathroom, even I stop there, but do you get the idea? My simple fix is to have it so that I need go no more than 3 feet and its in easy reach.

Having tried the olive oil ice cream at Humphrey Slocombe, I can only imagine how amazing these truffles taste.

    • Stephanie says:

easy access chocolate in every room of the house! that’s my kinda house. dying to try Humphrey Slocombe!!! olive oil ice cream sounds amazing.

  6. Jenny says:

So funny that other people do chocolate chips straight out of the bag. That’s my after dinner go-to. Sometimes I think I eat dinner just so I don’t feel too guilty about eating chocolate chips out of the bag afterwards.
Actually, on most occasions I’d rather skip dinner and go straight to dessert :)
Other chocolate favorites include frozen thin mints and pieces of the chocolate Easter bunny that I get every year that resides in my fridge…

  7. Kirstin says:

this past week I was having some rough chocolate cravings that weren’t satisfied until I made a big bowl of rich, double chocolate pudding! if i really just need a quick fix though, chocolate-covered espresso beans or almonds from Trader Joe’s are awwwwesooooome!

  8. Bonnie says:

I like any kind of Truffles. But since my daughter sent my a box of L’Estasi Dolec’s Lemongrass Ginger Truffle ,that becomes my most favorite. I love it.

  9. Morgan says:

I like baci chocolates, the italian “kisses”.

  10. Ashley says:

Hot fudge sauce by the spoonful :)

  11. Jacki says:

Pane al cioccolato (Italian chocolate bread) keeps my chocolate cravings at bay… for the most part :D

    • Stephanie says:

ooh i just spoke with a chef who features that on his dessert menu…he drizzles olive oil on top of toast points slathered in dark chocolate ganache, and then sprinkles some fleur de sel on top. sounds amazing.

  12. Rachael says:

    Chocolate ice cream!!!

  13. Corynn says:

    M & M’s is my chocolate fix!

  14. Karen says:

I often munch on chocolate chips for a quick fix :P

  15. Daniel says:

    Chocolate brownies are my favorite.

  16. My most favorite way to get my chocolate fix is through ice cream. I love cookies and cream, mint chocolate chip, brownie, really anything with chocolate in it!

    • Stephanie says:

yeahh…ice cream is a great medium to get any fix in as far as i’m concerned :) have you tried ben & jerry’s mint chocolate cookie? SO GOOD. it’s a white mint cookies n’ cream.

  17. Those sound absolutely DIVINE!

I love to get my fix with Joseph Schmidt truffles… but really any good quality chocolate can find a home in my house :-)

  18. Hands-down best craving quencher is to take a big tablespoon and stick it in a jar of Izzybelle’s chocolate fudge sauce, kept in the fridge for emergencies. Just out of the fridge, it’s softer than fudge, but as it hits your tongue and slowly comes to room temperature (if you can resist it enough to eat it slowly) it gets liquidy good and covers your tongue with delicious richness.

  19. Fuji Mama says:

Hmmm, that is so hard! It depends on my mood. This morning my dream chocolate fix was to whip up a batch of dark chocolate ganache and eat it all by myself with a spoon. It would have happened if I had been at home in my own kitchen, but luckily for my hips, we’re currently on vacation visiting family. Crisis averted.

  20. laura says:

I think a big fudge style brownie is the BEST was to eat chocolate. Second is ganache.

  21. Aika says:

Favorite chocolate fix would be Christopher Elbow’s Macadamia Praline…no question about it. My list can go on about chocolates. In my opinion, all of these chocolates are royalty from their perfect tempering and shine to the beautiful art sprayed on top. It’s the perfect picker upper. The balanced taste of both sweet and salty (Hawaiian Pink Sea Salt) is given a better kick with the crunchy texture of happiness (carmelized macadamia nuts) inside. Go get some now….Go!

You’ve probably already had all of these but try:
    CE Fleur de Sel
    CE Tahitian vanilla
    CE Rosemary Caramel
Recchiuti’s Fleur de Sel is to die for
Recchiuti’s Burnt Caramel Sauce is an ideal topper for ice cream, fruits, your spoon…
    Mo’s Bacon Bar (total winner)
Fran’s Smoked Salt Caramels (I’m a dark chocolate girl but this milk chocolate is unforgettable)

  22. Fran says:

I’m so glad to see a St. Louis establishment mentioned! One way I satisfy my chocolate cravings is with chocolate-covered raspberries from Bissinger’s. They’re unbelievably delicious.

  23. pat says:

ghirdelli chocolates brownies slightly underbaked with vanilla bean ice cream and choclate sauce is my chocolate fix

  24. ikkinlala says:

May Canadians enter? I’m not sure I have a favourite chocolate fix, but the one I eat most often (because it’s what we keep around the house) is little disks of plain dark chocolate from the company we order bulk nuts from.

  25. Alyssa V. says:

    “What’s your favorite chocolate fix?”

I usually take whatever chocolate I can get. But if I have a day when I’m feeling particularly picky, I usually turn to those delicious caramel-filled chocolate squares made by Ghrardelli, or dark chocolate Smidgens with chocolate ganache centers, from Gertrude Hawk. I did have an old favorite from G.H., but they (sadly) discontinued it. It was an oddity of a chocolate: small, colored chocolate stars that had little pop rocks embedded within their smooth, creamy bodies.

I remember a faintly waxy, Crayola taste–mostly because I used to store them in my crayon/marker box so I could eat them surreptitiously at school, whenever my teacher was too busy ranting about our stupidity to notice me. :P

Of course, I had to share with my classmates: “Give me some, and I won’t tell on you.” Brats.

  26. Britt says:

Does every and all count? Well, if I had to choose a favorite it would be somewhere between dark chocolate truffles filled with milk chocolate, 75% dutch chocolate bars, double chunk chocolate chip cookies, dark chocolate flourless cake, fudge and chocolate coated nuts. Of course I could go on for ever but I think I will leave now while I don’t feel guilty. . .

  27. annalene says:

my favorite chocolate fix is dark chocolate covered marzipan (ritter sport)!

  28. Justine says:

I was eating chocolate chips out of the bag last night as a last resort, and realized that I have become a chocolate snob; they were just too grainy on the tongue. I love Dagoba bars, 70% or higher. And Vosges bars are wonderful, too. But sometimes in a pinch I’ll make a microwave-brownie-in-a-cup. :) These, on the other hand, look fabulous.

  29. Karen says:

My favorite chocolate fix is dark chocolate covered almonds. Yum.

  30. Chef Erich says:

My favorite chocolate fix is any fresh fruit chilled to just above freezing then dip them in dark chocolate and then eat. Wonderful

  31. Without a doubt, it would be dark or milk chocolate filled with a hazelnut mousse. Yum!

  32. The truffles look delicious! I would SO love to win a box. My favorite chocolate fix would be my chocolate brownie pudding. Yum! Love your site.
    ~Lynette

  33. When the surge of a chocolate craving quickly overcomes me, I splurge for the 3 pack of Ferrero Rochers. Popping each sphere one by one I expect the same thrilling experience. First the crushed pieces of hazelnut drizzles down into my mouth as the smooth, thin milk chocolate gives way to a crispy, yummy wafer inside of which cradles the silky soft chocolate pillow enveloping the buried treasure-a whole, fresh hazlenut. Ahh. That was grand.

  34. Katie says:

I always keep a bar of extremely dark chocolate (at least 80%) around to satisfy my cravings. I’m also a big fan of chocolate covered strawberries, though :)

  35. K says:

Great site/photos! One of my many many chocolate fixes is Nutella on warm toast, or chocolate truffles.

  36. Anne says:

Mexican hot chocolate — love the spice.

  37. Donalyn says:

So glad I spotted your post on Photograzing! My favorite chocolate is probably my own brownies which are rich and dark and chewy. I would not turn down any dark chocolate either. Or milk chocolate. Or chocolate milk. Or choclate anything when you get right down to it…

  38. Sonya says:

Honestly, this is a childhood thing, but a spoonful of Ovaltine will often do it for me (the kind in the glass jar with the orange label and lid- the kind in the cardboard carton tastes totally different.)

  39. Ameful says:

My favorite chocolate fix would have to be a caramel covered with dark chocolate and finished with a sprinkle of fleur de sel. That, or a Bissinger’s Olive Oil Truffle ;-) In an emergency situation, I’ll scoop up a spoonful of creamy peanut butter, and dip it into some gooey chocolate fudge sauce and eat it very slowly, barefoot and with my eyes closed.

  40. Jessie says:

I love chocolate period. lol but I have to say my favorite kind of chocolate would have to be peanut butter filled chocolates like reese’s pb cup!

  41. andrea says:

I love fran’s salted caramels. yum! this seems like a similar savory/sweet/salty combo, so I’m intrigued…

  42. bee says:

My fav fix is black forest gateau especially if it is home made. Chocolate + Cherries *thumbs up* :)

  43. Bailey says:

I definitely crave brownies when I crave chocolate. They are so fudgy, moist, and even more chocolaty with some added chocolate chips! :-)

  44. Found you at Photograzing on Serious Eats. Your image of these truffles is just stunning.
My favorite chocolate is Vosges Haut Chocolat’s “Mo Bacon Bar”. Mmmmmmmmm…
    Merci beaucoup…!

  45. Syerra says:

I love anything that has heath and chocolate…… and any crushed oreos!!!! yum!

  46. Michelle says:

The truffles look amazing! I have never heard of Bissinger’s Handcrafted Chocolatier before and now I can’t wait to try them!

  47. RITA says:

Starbucks. hot. cocoa. Its like a decadent chocolate bar liquidized and smothered in whipped cream. Only sometimes you get people who don’t make it right…like by using low fat milk [GASP!]. The taste is in the fat guys.

  48. Tangled Noodle says:

I get my favorite fix every morning: I scoop out a teaspoon or two of Penzey’s Hot Chocolate mix into my coffee cup and top with some joe! It’s the best way to start my day. 8-D

  49. gr8eat says:

Add a heaping teaspoon of peanut butter to a scoop of chocolate ice cream and mix well.
