Chuao Chocolatier Giveaway: Firecracker Truffles
Sunday, July 4, 2010
Kaboom!
Happy 4th of July everyone! Hope you’re be celebrating with some good BBQ, cold bevvies, and spectacular fireworks!
In honor of this booming occasion, we’re doing a giveaway of Chuao Chocolatier’s Firecracker Truffles.

The Firecracker Truffle contains a caramel fudge center infused with chipotle chile and a touch of sea salt. It is then enrobed in dark chocolate and a layer of popping candy.
Take a bite and as the caramel and chocolate start to dissolve on your tongue, the pop-rocks start crackling away – you can actually hear them! A gentle heat from the chipotle kicks in, before long, your mouth is sparking away like your own private fireworks show.
You may remember Chuao from our Chocolate Coverage of the Fancy Food Show back in January. That was our first introduction to Venezuelan born Master Chef and Chocolatier Michael Antonorsi, when he knocked our socks off with his Firecracker Bar.
Michael and his brother, Richard, founded the chocolate company in 2002, with the vision of pioneering “fusion chocolate” through creating unusual, unexpected, and delicious flavors using premium chocolate and fresh, natural ingredients. They called the company Chuao (pronounced “Chew-WOW”), named after the Venezuelan cacao-growing region, in homage to their family heritage and their cacao farming legacy. The Antonorsi brothers’ ancestors once ran a small family farm that was an important part of the criollo cacao plantation industry; chocolate is part of their roots.
We’re excited to share their labor of love with you! These fiery truffles are quite the conversation piece – break them out at your next party, or surprise someone with one, and get ready for an awesome reaction.

The use of popping candy in this is just brilliant. It brings me right back to the pop-rocks of my youth. (Was there ever any truth to that whole “pop-rocks and soda will make you explode” warning? I never dared to find out.) Nostalgia is the theme of today’s giveaway question ![]()

Wow! Candy of my youth. There were so many, it’s almost impossible to choose. If I must narrow it down, it’s a choice between Chunky w/ nuts & fruit and the old M&M bar. The M&M was the precursor of today’s Kit Kat bar, but it only had two skinny connected bars (instead of KK’s four) and was much longer; wrapped in a gold paper. Haven’t seen one in AGES.
The Firecracker Truffle sounds absolutely awesome!
I loved Zero bars when I was a kid. Not many people ate Zero bars but they were white chocolate on the outside and yummy nougut on the inside!!

In my childhood, we can’t afford to have chocolate. So the white rabbit candy is my favorite. But now I love any kind of truffles.
Candy cigarettes & Lik-a-Stik. I used to “smoke” the cigs while riding my horse and pretend I was the Marlboro Man. I’d eat Lik-a-Stik by the pool and sometimes just skip the Stik altogether. Oh, those wild days!
I used to love going to the candy store with my grandfather where they still had penny candy. We’d stock up on all kinds of stuff, but back then what I wanted most was equal portions of red & purple Swedish Fish.
My favorite candy was Sixlets! A bag of those weird faux chocolate candy balls and a red Icee would have me on Cloud 9!!

I grew up in Canada… so I would have to say my childhood favorite was Aero bars (which are chocolate bars with air bubbles)! Now they come in mint and dark chocolate too.
Starbursts and skittles! All the crazy, silly flavors too. Full of sugar and empty calories.
In my day there used to be a “penny candy store” in the area. It was a real treat to go there and fill a paper bag with all kinds of goodies -everything from candy necklaces to gummy candies- I can’t even remember all the kinds they had but I do know I miss it!

What an interesting piece of chocolate! I wonder if they were at the fancy food fair here in NYC. Anyway, my fave candy growing up were boxes of Nerd candies. I loved the two different colours and flavours – plus the packaging was fun too.
Hmm, how do you expect me to limit it to one? I have to say it was my mom’s homemade chocolates with peanut butter filling. I could not get enough of them and they led me to a life of crime. I pilfered them at every opportunity. My poor mom, she could never figure out what happen to them, well she did eventually, it didn’t help that my dad also took from the stash.
My favorite candy was “zots”, a hard candy with a fizzy middle, and I still love almond roca.
