Skinny Banana Chocolate Malt Milkshake
Monday, December 1, 2008I recently saw a jar of Chocolate Malt Ovaltine in the supermarket and was reminded of the delicious banana chocolate milkshakes I used to make after school.
Despite the totally cheesy slogan, true to its advertising, it completely satisfied my chocolate cravings and was fat free, cholesterol free, and only packed 80 calories per serving. Mind you, it contained 15 grams of sugar per serving…but whatever.
Needless to say, I immediately snatched the vintage looking jar of Ovaltine off the shelf and threw it in my cart. Sure enough, it still does the trick. The chocolate malt and banana is a classic combo that will always satisfy my sweet tooth. Blend it all together with some skim milk and ice, and voila! A guilt-free (or substantially less guilty), frothy, creamy treat.
If you wanna go crazy, add a spoonful of peanut butter ![]()

have you ever tried Horlicks? It is delicious and would make a great shake as well.

dk: interesting. i’ve always seen horlicks on those drink menus in chinatown bakeries, but never tried it. would you use it as a kind of vanilla malt base for a shake? p.s. thanks for the link. what’s with the weird ad campaigns for weird instant malted beverages?

I remember drinking Ovaltine as a child – good stuff – a little chocolate fix! I should think about this for some of my smoothie recipes, thanks for the tip.

If you freeze your bananas you may be able to skip the ice and get a smoother drink.
Great tip, Lynn! That’s how I usually make my smoothies
A frozen banana does wonders.
