Coffee Buzzzzfeatured

I love coffee.  No, seriously.  I really love it.  There are few things as deeply satisfying as a rich, frothy, quality cup of coffee.  I discovered my local Philz Coffee today in SoMa.  When I took my first sip of the heavenly elixir I’ve come to think of as my liquid crack, it stopped me dead in my tracks.  Wow.  This was seriously good coffee.

The twenty hand-selected blends on the menu are the result of 25 years of “coffee alchemy and invention” by owner, Phil Jaber and his son Jacob.  Each unique combination has its own personality and layers of flavors, and its own fun little description on the menu (I’m a sucker for things like that).  So many tantalizing choices.  There was the house signature blend, the original Tesora, the exotic Turkish, with its alluring hints of cardamom and mint leaf, and a slew of other blends that sounded delicious.  I couldn’t decide what to get, so I trusted a fellow junkie and got what the guy in front of me got.

The baristas at Philz grind the beans for each cup to order (big points on that for freshness and TLC).  My order was a custom blend of #16, Philtered Soul (“a chocolaty, medium dark roast”) and #9, Canopy of Heaven (“a light roast of complex, lively flavors”).  I took it with cream and sugar (that’s right, none of that watery skim and fake sugar garbage) and the result was…bliss.  I felt like I was drinking the essence…the soul…of the coffee beans, hand-picked just for me.  The depth of flavor, the nutty sweetness, the subtle notes of chocolate, the frothy layer of crema floating on top…mmmm.

Thanks, Philz, for putting the love back into commercialized coffee.
