Out The Door…Meh
Friday, December 5, 2008Farshid was in town this past week, and was unfortunately feeling a little under the weather. His delicate SoCal constitution just couldn’t handle the SF chill. So what the doctor ordered was some hot, soothing pho.
He hadn’t been to the Ferry Building yet, and I’ve been wanting to try The Slanted Door, so we set out to take care of both matters at hand. Unfortunately, we missed lunch service by just a few minutes. Boo. Fortunately, the resto’s takeout stall, Out The Door, was open for business, and served the pho sicky was craving.
We got the Hanoi Beef Noodle Soup and the Sauteed Shrimp with Vermicelli.
The pho had a nice rich broth, and differed from the classic with its use of wide rice noodles rather than the traditional thin noodles.
The shrimp vermicelli was light and fresh, with plenty of meaty prawns, crunchy cucumber, pickled carrots, crushed peanuts, mint, and a sweet tangy side of fish sauce.
At about $10 each, it was a deal for the Ferry Building, but kind of a jip for Vietnamese food. For a real pho craving, Bodega Bistro is still my fave. However, all in all, a decent light lunch.

Ten bucks each for pho?! They look delicious but that’s pretty steep. Still, if it satisfied a need . . . My sister-in-law told me about the Ferry Building and I look forward to visiting someday, pricey pho notwithstanding!
FEEL BETTER POOPSHID!
My name is NOT poopshid!
Yay to Steph.. she’s awesome. David’s not bad either… but one thing’s for sure.. the pho here= average at best
I just had Out The Door a few days ago! So delicious– I didn’t mean to eat the entire bowl of cararmelized pork and vermicelli, but… I guess a combination of bring brain dead from a final and good food in front was too much for me to resist!
And I wanted to try The Slanted Door a couple months ago, but, like you, I also missed getting a seat (such a popular place!). Next time, I guess…
yeah.. it seems that the pho is mostly thick noodles here instead of thin. weird, eh? i wonder how it is in vietnam….
If you want very tasty and affordable pho, you should try the one on Broadway St. in Chinatown (cross st. is near Columbus). Go to the BIGGER one, NOT the tight-spaced one. A big bowl of delicious pho is around $5-6.
Tangled Noodle: I know! Wasn’t worth 10 bucks. You should def check out the Ferry Building though if you’re ever in town! For lunch there, I would recommend Taylor’s Automatic Refresher…amazing burgers and shakes. I am a huge fan of their ahi tuna burger
i have yet to find a better pho spot in the city!
Poopshid: Aww thanks monkey friend. I do feel terrible that the pho was not up to par. Next time, Bodega Bistro all the way!
Jeanne: haha, that’ll do it! I have heard wonderful things about Slanted Door, so it’s still on my list.
joanh: I’ve heard northern vietnamese pho tends to use thick noodles, while southern uses the thinner ones. Personally, I prefer thin noodles that have a nice chewy bite to them a la Bodega Bistro on Larkin
Zari: I’ll have to check it out next time i’m in chinatown! thanks for the tip!
Man that looks amazing, I am a Phoaholic. Definitely on my list next time I visit SF. Nice photo’s
foodphotoblog: thanks! yes, out the door is the “take out” counter of the slanted door…which is supposed to be great. I’m really looking forward to checking it out.
As Tangled Noodles sis-in-law, we’ll be starting off with a nice wine flight at the Ferry Building and then go from there – a little oyster tasting, olive oil and chocolate sampling. I agree with you on Taylor’s, and can vouch for your Pho suggestion, but thought I’d start her off easy before heading to the ‘loin. =)
ahhh i didn’t know you were related to Tangled Noodle! how fun
mmm def do $1 oysters at Hog Island, and then grab some of acme’s amazing olive bread, a little cheese from cowgirl, and have a picnic on the embarcadero!
