Thursday NightLife at Cal Academy and Sushi Bistro New Locationfeatured

Thursday nights at the California Academy of Sciences have been transformed into a vibrant scene where you can tickle your inner scientist with a cocktail in hand, and enjoy the museum’s thought provoking exhibits while a mini dance party throws down.

We worked up an appetite pondering our teeny tiny existence after viewing the stars and vast galaxies in the new state of the art planetarium. Good thing Sushi Bistro – our favorite sushi spot in the Inner Richmond – is conveniently located just a few minutes away!

If you’re a long time fan of this neighborhood favorite, don’t worry if something looks different. Your memory is not playing tricks on you. Sushi Bistro has moved…but not far – just a few doors down from their old location.

Gone is the colorful tropical party décor, replaced with sleek black lacquered furniture, Asian chic red tones, and much more elbow room. While the look and feel of the place is more elegantly streamlined rather than quirky fun now, the food has remained the same: fantastic.

Our two favorite dishes are still must-haves. A visit to Sushi Bistro just wouldn’t be satisfying without ordering the orgasmic Rock n’Roll, and the phenomenal Ahi Tuna Poke.

(Read more about my love of these two dishes in my first review of Sushi Bistro here).

4 pieces of Salmon Sashimi ($7.90)...well it was 4. I couldn’t resist eating one before taking the shot.

I’m always shocked by the huge portions of fish they offer up here. Case in point, these gorgeous pieces of salmon sashimi. At portions that easily double – or even triple – what other restaurants would serve, the sashimi at Sushi Bistro comes at a serious value.

Waikiki: Mango and Avocado topped with Unagi, Eel Sauce and Macadamia Nuts

Waikiki: Mango and Avocado topped with Unagi, Eel Sauce and Macadamia Nuts

I couldn’t resist trying the Waikiki since I’m a sucker for anything mango, avocado, and macadamia nut. Similar to other specialty rolls I’ve tried, the result was just a bit too busy for my taste. Next time, I’ll have to try another wild card, and hopefully keep adding to my stable of favorites at this consistently solid sushi restaurant.
