pudge's philly cheesesteak

Pat’s who? Gino’s what? Fuhgettaboutit. It’s all about Pudge’s in Blue Bell, PA. Come hungry because a couple of “large” sized sandwiches could feed a small village with a foot and a half of juicy chopped ribeye piled high on fresh Italian bread that tastes like it was just baked that day. If you know what’s good for you, your 18 inches of meat will be smothered with fried onions and have white American cheese oozing out.

I introduced my parents to my favorite, the Mushroom Cheesesteak with fried onions. Mom and Dad made me proud and took it down with gusto.

Pudge's philly cheesesteak

Can you tell we’re related?

Ah yes, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

First located across from LaSalle University, Pudge’s was started 40 betty-boop-and-dog-pudgeyears ago by Frank Carbone, who was nicknamed “Pudge” after Betty Boop’s dog. The restaurant has been in Blue Bell now for over 30 years. They will soon be moving into new digs, but don’t worry they won’t be far. Just around the corner at the Whitpain Shopping Center (1510 DeKalb Pike, Blue Bell, PA).

Whenever I’m in town, a cheesesteak from Pudge’s is a must. Wash one down with some of the birch beer they have on tap and you will be one happy, and fullll camper.

  1. Is it ridiculous to drive from LA to PA for one of these?

  2. Lovely.
    Comfort at its best!

Nothing like a good cheese steak!

    makes my mouth water.

    It’s worth the trip.

  4. I am from that area of PA but have never visited Pudge’s. I will have to make a ‘to-do’ next time I am visiting home. Thanks!

The Duo Dishes: haha, your dedication to good eats would be much admired if you did!

Ray: thanks! haven’t ventured into cheesesteak territory here in SF yet, but i’ve heard there are a few places worth checking out! any recos?

Mom: glad you liked it :)

Rachel “Tha Pizza Cutta” Joyce: yes! do it!!

Hua: you are such a poet <3

  7. You are making me so miss America! What I would give for a philly cheesesteak. If I had any children I’d give one of them up.

Duo Dishes…Distance-wise we are probably the same distance from that cheesesteak. If there was a bridge across the atlantic I might be driving on it now. Think if I swam across the Atlantic how many cheesesteaks I would get to eat for all the calories I burnt.

It’s been a while but I’ve had some very good cheesesteaks in SF at Jake’s in the Marina.

This sounds so good. The philly cheesesteak is by far my favorite food of all time. Although I have never had a traditional philly cheesesteak in Philly, I definitely need to go after this one.

My cravings are usually satiated after hitting up Philly’s Best in Orange County. I get a Philly Cheesteak, with Cheese Fries, a delicious cream soda (not that A&W crap!), and some jelly filled pastries to square it off.

Steph! How about this blast from the past– Brown summer school? Imagine my delight when I stumbled across your delicious blog. Yayy for food and technology bringing people together. But having lived in Philly for 4 years now, I consider myself something of a cheesesteak connoisseur and have a real contender against Pudge’s: Saad’s Halal in West Philly. Insane in its delicious. Next time you’re in town, give me a buzz and I’ll introduce you to meaty-cheese heaven.

  12. Stephanie says:

gastroanthropologist: haha they are quite good…perhaps even worth a first born son. i’ll have to check out jake’s! i feel like i need a cheesesteak go-to that isn’t across the country ;)

J.Hua: haha yah…happppy bellllly mmmm yumyumyum

    Brianne: indeed oh yeahhh

Zain: wow. you are a beast! you were respectable to begin with, searching out the cheesesteak in the land of dieters, slappin it with a dose of cheese fries, and mmm cream soda…but the jelly pastries on top. that just boosted you to beast status. sick.

Poulomi: P!!!! hi hi hi! yay internet! what are you up to these days? i’ll have to swoop Saad’s Halal next time I’m in the area for sure :) thanks for the tip!
