“Steamed” Sea Bass, Cantonese Stylefeatured
As featured in Bay Area Bites, July 15, 2009.
I use “steamed” in quotes because this dish forgoes the traditional method of steaming in a covered wok in favor of a more contemporary technique: the microwave.
Before you shun me, just try it.
The fish ends up steaming in its own juices, and soaks up all the great flavor of the seasonings, fresh ginger and scallion.
This is one of the first recipes my mom ever taught me, and I love teaching it to newbies because it’s shockingly fast, easy, healthy and delicious. With the help of the ol’ dinger you can have this dish done from start to finish in 15 minutes.

Osha Thai on the Embarcaderofeatured
If you’re local, you’ve probably already identified your neighborhood Osha. A wildly popular chain in SF serving affordable and tasty Thai food, there is an Osha outpost wherever you turn in this city (Geary, Valencia, 2nd St., Union, Embarcadero).
The Embarcadero locale is the one I frequent the most, and as we discovered a few weeks ago, is the perfect spot for a fancyish group dinner without the fancy prices. We ordered 5 dishes for 6 of us and feasted family style for $17/person including tax and tip.
The ambiance/decor is sexy tropical Asian, think rich colors, exotic statues, orchids, and a demure hostess dressed to the nines. The food hits the spot with that addictive combination of great textures and bright flavors that makes me constantly crave Thai cuisine. Coconut milk curries, chili heat, thai basil, fresh lime, crunchy bean sprouts, roasted peanuts, noodles that are full of what we Chinese call “wok hei.” That savory, magical flavor that can only come out of a high heat, seasoned wok.

Paladar: Cuban Sando, I think I love youfeatured
As featured in Bay Area Bites, July 8, 2009.
Rich, roasted, shredded Niman pork, boiled ham, melty Swiss, an even layer of sweet and tangy pickles, whole grain mustard, creamy mayo, and a buttery, crusty, fresh roll, hot pressed, melding it all together.
Ah.MA.zing.
No, seriously. If I could marry a sandwich, this would be it.
Each bite of the Cubano gives you everything one could ever wish for in a sandwich. Meatiness. Meltiness. Crunch. Chew. An explosion of flavors in perfect harmony. Mee-ow.
