Out The Door…Mehfeatured

Farshid was in town this past week, and was unfortunately feeling a little under the weather. His delicate SoCal constitution just couldn’t handle the SF chill. So what the doctor ordered was some hot, soothing pho.

He hadn’t been to the Ferry Building yet, and I’ve been wanting to try The Slanted Door, so we set out to take care of both matters at hand. Unfortunately, we missed lunch service by just a few minutes. Boo. Fortunately, the resto’s takeout stall, Out The Door, was open for business, and served the pho sicky was craving.

We got the Hanoi Beef Noodle Soup and the Sauteed Shrimp with Vermicelli.

Tomato Pie: Ode to Corropolesefeatured

“Tomato pies are the strippers of the food world: They’re usually ordered for special occasions, and everyone tends to get a little too excited around them. But you’ve got good reason to freak if you ordered from Corropolese Bakery & Deli.” – Philadelphia City Paper

Well said…although I’ve never ordered a stripper for game day. Then again, maybe I just need to live a little.

Tomato pies are indeed utterly delicious, and as I’ve learned, are hard to come by outside of the south Jersey/Philly area. Keep in mind, this is not to be confused with the southern, Paula Deen-style tomato pie that is made with mayonnaise and contained in a pie shell. No, no, this tomato pie is more like a sweet simple pizza, minus the gooey cheese. Before you stop reading right there, let me assure you, you don’t even miss the cheese! (I know! I never thought I’d utter those words.)

Skinny Banana Chocolate Malt Milkshakefeatured

Ovaltine: “Tastes Great and Great for You!”

I recently saw a jar of Chocolate Malt Ovaltine in the supermarket and was reminded of the delicious banana chocolate milkshakes I used to make after school.

Despite the totally cheesy slogan, true to its advertising, it completely satisfied my chocolate cravings and was fat free, cholesterol free, and only packed 80 calories per serving. Mind you, it contained 15 grams of sugar per serving…but whatever.

Needless to say, I immediately snatched the vintage looking jar of Ovaltine off the shelf and threw it in my cart. Sure enough, it still does the trick. The chocolate malt and banana is a classic combo that will always satisfy my sweet tooth. Blend it all together with some skim milk and ice, and voila! A guilt-free (or substantially less guilty), frothy, creamy treat.

If you wanna go crazy, add a spoonful of peanut butter 🙂

The Spoonies Awards 2008featured

It’s the day after Thanksgiving, and like me, I’m sure many of you are fooded out…although, that leftover pie sitting there is lookin mighty fine. Sorry, I digress. So, today, no recipes or reviews or photos that will make you feel obese. Instead, it’s time to cast your VOTE for the first annual Spoonies!

What, you may ask, are the Spoonies? The Spoonies are Lick My Spoon’s homage to the very best, the most delicious, the most unique and awe-inspiring food establishments. These are the places that you kind of don’t want to tell anyone about because then the secret would be out. These are your must-go places when you have friends in town and want to show them what eating is all about in your town. These are the spots you hit up when you have the craving for that certain dish that only they can give you the way you want it.

So spill. Tell me, what are the spots you love and why? Please limit your nominations to establishments in NY and SF. Winners will be announced the first week of January, and winning establishments will receive their very own Spoonies Award (it’s going to be a gold, wooden spoon you can mount…very chic).
