Meals on Wheels Benefit: 23rd Annual Star Chefs and Vintners Galafeatured

On Sunday, May 16th, Meals on Wheels of San Francisco will be throwing its 23rd Annual Star Chefs and Vintners Gala at Fort Mason’s Festival Pavilion. The gala is a benefit for San Francisco’s homebound seniors, and is the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year.

Nancy Oakes of Boulevard will be returning for her 7th year as Gala Chef Chair — it will be her 22nd year participating in the benefit. She will be leading an illustrious line-up of more than 70 of the Bay Area’s finest chefs. Who says too many cooks in the kitchen is a bad thing?

Among the chefs participating in this year’s gala are: Mourad Lahlou (Aziza), Jeff Banker/Lori Baker (Baker & Banker), Daniel Patterson (Coi), Douglas Keane/Nick Peyton (Cyrus), Jan Birnbaum (Epic Roasthouse), Thomas McNaughton (Flour + Water), Chris Cosentino (Incanto), Staffan Terje (Perbacco), Laurence Jossel (Nopa / Nopalito), Richard Reddington (REDD), Charles Phan (The Slanted Door), and Mark Sullivan (Spruce).

Talk about a culinary dream team, huh?

Salmon with Creamy Mustard Saucefeatured

Have you ever played the Barefoot Contessa drinking game? One drink for every time she asks, “How easy is that?”, two for each time she mentions Jeffrey (that lucky dog), social for any time she implores you to use only “really good (insert expensive ingredient here)”. It’s a fabulous game.

By the end, you are tipsy as a Hamptons housewife at a clam bake. You are also starving from all the delectable dishes taunting you on the screen. And, you may or may not be sporting a sweater draped over your shoulders at this stage in the game.

Oh, Ina, I joke because I love. (And because I am secretly envious of your BMW convertible, Pottery Barn kitchen, and herb garden the size of my apartment.)

In all seriousness, I do adore many of the Barefoot Contessa’s recipes. They are classic dishes that any domestic-goddess-in-training needs to know, wholesome home-cooking with a French slant. Things like roast chicken and brownies from scratch…or roasted fish in a creamy mustard sauce.

Featured in AirTran Airways Inflight Magazine!featured

If you happen to be flying AirTran Airways this month, be sure to take a look through their inflight magazine, GO…and don’t be surprised if you see mah face!!!

Each month, GO features a different food blogger from a different city, and asks them to do a Top 5 round up of a specific dish that city is known for (ex: Best barbecue in Kansas City, or Best chowder in Boston). And, they asked yours truly to do a list of the Best Dim Sum in SF!

Here’s a link to my list, republished on GO’s site.

*** Disclaimer: Please pardon 1) the inordinately large photograph of my face – not sure why they made it so huge, and 2) the reference to our lovely city by the bay as “San Fran” – I’m sure their editor didn’t realize how much that nickname grates on the locals. ***

As many of you already know, dim sum is a topic that is near and dear to my heart. It is also something that folks in SF are fiercely passionate about, and discussions over where’s the best dim sum in town often lead to heated debates. So, to have to boil it down to a measly five places was not an easy task. I decided the best way to go about determining my top five was to narrow it down by dish. Here’s my unedited round up. Enjoy!
