High Five Fridays: Weekly Meal Plan, Super Bowl Spreadfeatured
It’s going to be a big weekend here in San Francisco. Are you going to be day-drinking watching the Super Bowl this Sunday? Are you fan-fan or are you more of a half-time-and-commercials kind of viewer? Maybe you’re like me…in it for the snacks.
Either way, the Super Bowl is a good excuse to get together with friends, eat, drink, and get rowdy on a Sunday. Here are some dishes to make sure your Super Bowl Spread is a winner:
- Avo-Cobb-O Guacamole. For a party version of this, I’d skip the egg component, but otherwise, this guac is a sure crowd-pleaser. I mean, hello, it is guacamole with crushed chips already mixed in! Brill-iant.
- Best Oven Fried Buffalo Wings. So you’re telling me these oven-fried Buffalo Wings not only don’t suck, but taste like the real thing? That they’re “actually indistinguishable from the deep-fried version”?! I’m game.
- Atomic Buffalo Turds. Yes, that is what they’re really called. A reason in and of itself to make them if you ask me. I mean, if you can’t serve Atomic Buffalo Turds on Super Bowl Sunday, when can you serve them?
- Red and Gold Beet Crostini. Probably not your typically football fare, but we are representing San Francisco after all, so not too far off the mark (as long as your beets are local and sustainably farmed, of course). Go Niners!
- TREAT YO SELF: Spicy Caramel Popcorn Mexican Chocolate Brownies. Leave it to Irvin to come up with this brilliant combination. It’s sweet, salty, a touch spicy, and totally fun.
Overtime Bonus Round…because it’s good karma:
- My famous Big Ass Pot of Chili (2 lbs bacon, 4 lbs sausage, 6 lbs ground beef) yeah, this feeds a happy crowd
- Jambalaya Arancini, a shout out to our Super Bowl host city!
- Pancetta Mac and Cheese, another NOLA-inspired, amazingly delicious dish
- More Football Food
- And if you’re actually in NOLA this weekend, you’ll want to have this in your back pocket: 12 Great Bites of New Orleans
Have a great weekend, friends!
Harry & David Pear and Granola Crisp Recipefeatured
Anyone who has ever sunk their teeth into one of Harry & David’s Royal Riviera Pears knows how unbelievably sweet and juicy and luscious they are. I’m a fan. So, it was a no-brainer when Harry & David asked if I would be interested in partnering with them and talk about their Thank You Gifts.
I chose to review the Applegate Gift Basket Deluxe because it features not only my favorite pears, but also crisp apples, giant cashews, roasted almonds, trail mix, dried fruit, and granola. This mix of snacks walks the line between healthy and delicious – perfect for keeping those New Year’s resolutions going strong.

Fancy Food Show 2013: Highlights and Trendsfeatured
The Fancy Food Show hit Moscone on Sunday for its annual massive three-day schmooze fest of specialty and gourmet goods. With 80,000 products shown from 35+ countries and regions, it is the largest marketplace devoted exclusively to specialty foods and beverages on the West Coast.
Strategically avoiding the crowds that formed around every booth with a TV tuned in to the Niners game, we were able to taste an impressive amount of samples from this year’s exhibitors. Here are some trends we picked up on:
1. SUPERFOOD MANIA
We saw proclaimed superfoods like goji, quinoa, and chia seeds in everything from snack mixes to breakfast cereals, pastas, and energy drinks. Despite some unfortunate branding for a few of these products (I’m looking at you, Holy Crap Breakfast Cereal), most of it tasted surprisingly good. In particular, we were fans of the Raw Superfruit Mix from Extreme Health USA. It was a hefty, chewy mix of organic goji berries, mulberries, golden berries, and blueberries. The golden berries were a first for me. Also called Incan Berry, they have a sweet, tart, grapefruit-like flavor that play well with their other super friends in the mix.

Peppermint Candy Cane Ice Creamfeatured
Remember when I bought way too many candy canes in a fit of holiday spirit? I was just about to toss them out the other day when a stroke of genius hit me.
Peppermint Candy Cane Ice Cream.
It is perhaps the tastiest homemade treat I’ve made all winter. Full of sweet cream and minty winter freshness, this peppermint ice cream is the perfect way to polish off those candy canes. You may even find yourself clearing out the boxes of candy canes left at the store just to make more batches of this ice cream. Good move! They’re probably on sale! You win at life.
