High Five Fridays: Weekly Meal Plan, Veg Outfeatured
Whew, it has been a busy week! 2012 ended and 2013 began. We said goodbye to a year full of delicious memories and we said hello to cooking school!
Cookies, crumb cake, carbs slathered in honey butter…we had a good run, old friends, but it is time to move on, shape up, veg out.
Whether you are in detox mode or just gearing up to tackle the new year with some good, healthy veggie-fueled energy, here are some delicious and nutritious ideas for your meal plan this week.
So raise a glass (of green juice), and cheers to Friday, cheers to you!
- Beets with Endive, Citrus and Radish Salad. I discovered Christopher’s gorgeous food photography on 500 px and was delighted to find out that not only could he shoot a mouthwatering photo, he could cook too! This artful beet salad is just the thing to brighten these winter days. (It’s so darn pretty, keeping this in mind for Valentine’s Day!)
- Kale, Cabbage and Carrot Salad. This is a great salad for busy people. People like you. Make a big batch and keep it in the fridge. It gets better with time as the hearty greens soak in the flavorful creamy caper dressing.
- Roasted Eggplant Salad with Almonds, Feta, and Mint. This salad packs a flavorful punch with eggplant that is roasted in olive oil, cider vinegar, honey, smoked paprika, and cumin. Add bunches of salad greens and some grilled chicken and this is one healthy, filling, and satisfying meal.
- Beet and Orange Salad. Ok, so there are two beet and citrus salads on this list, but I couldn’t choose. Besides, they’re totally different and fantastic in their own right. I love this version for its simplicity and sunshine. This is a no fuss kind of recipe for any day (written in Michael’s distinct hilarious fashion).
- TREAT YO SELF: Just because we are being good doesn’t mean we can’t treat ourselves. Heidi’s “Nikki’s Healthy Cookies” have been a favorite of mine for years. The recipe uses mashed bananas and a bit of coconut oil as a binder, and is butter-less, flour-less, egg-less, and potentially sugar-less. They are so much better than you would ever expect.

San Francisco Cooking Schoolfeatured
A few months ago, I attended a media preview of the San Francisco Cooking School, a new school in the city offering professional culinary and pastry arts certificate programs, along with recreational cooking classes in a gorgeous work space.
I was excited to check out the new facility, perhaps cover a few of their interesting rec classes, but as I learned more about the school, their philososophy, the curriculum…a little seed that was planted long ago sprouted its first leaf.

2012: A Delicious Year in Reviewfeatured
2012. She came. She conquered.
This was a big year. It was our first year back to SF after our blip on the East coast and our travels.
We celebrated with a lot of oyster excursions. We had fun visitors. Dear friends got married and had baaabies. We ran a half marathon and din’t die. I turned 30. There were magical rainbows. 2012 was a good year. Here are 12 tasty moments to remember:

High Five Fridays: Weekly Meal Plan, Party Foodfeatured
Are you gearing up for some party time this weekend? This High Five Friday is dedicated to all you social butterflies. Stay fabulous.
- Jambalaya Arancini. Melty cheese-stuffed, deep-fried bites of heaven. And, great for parties because you can make them ahead of time and just reheat/recrisp them in the oven.
- Prosciutto Parmesan Puffs. What is more fabulous than decadent, poofy gougeres, hot out of the oven? Decadent, poofy gougeres chock full of prosciutto, Parmigiano-Reggiano, thyme, and rosemary, hot out of the oven. You may have to fight your guests for these. Pro tip: take a few down in the kitchen before you even bring these out.
- Crispy Oven Roasted Chickpeas. Ever since Rachel posted these crispy chickpeas, I’ve been obsessed with them. I always get compliments when I bust these out at dinner parties and they are SO easy to make. Healthy too!
- Walnut Date Cups with Candied Bacon. These make impressive hors d’oeuvres…and they’re topped with Candied Bacon. Yes. You heard me.
- TREAT YO SELF: Black Forest Style Berry Gateaux. Simply stunning. Almost too beautiful to eat. Almost.
